(CBC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-wrap\">\n<div class=\"sharecount\">\n<p class=\"sharecount-text\"><span class=\"vf-widget sharecount-item\" data-widget=\"sharetotal\" data-realtime=\"\u201cfalse&quot;\" data-widget-id=\"w38\"><span class=\"vf-total-shares\">118<\/span><\/span><span class=\"sharecount-item\">\u00a0shares<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-body\" class=\"story-body alpha-text sclt-article\" tabindex=\"-1\">\nManitoba&#8217;s film industry has posted its best year in a decade.<br \/>\nProduction volume for the past year sits around $127 million, according to Manitoba Film and Music.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s 27 per cent better than the annual average, and it&#8217;s a trend Manitoba Film and Music&#8217;s CEO expects to continue.<br \/>\n&#8220;I would say this is the best province in the country to be shooting in,&#8221; said Carole Vivier. &#8220;We have the best tax credit in Canada. The reason for that is, we don&#8217;t have a direct flight to Los Angeles. We don&#8217;t have direct flights to New York. \u00a0We are a smaller centre so we have to work harder and be more competitive than anyone else to stay on that map.&#8221;<br \/>\nOther provinces have rolled back tax credits for film productions in recent years, and some have put caps on the amount productions can claim.<br \/>\nNova Scotia replaced their tax credit with a film and television incentive fund,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/film-industry-ns-to-sudbury-feb17-1.3450435\">sparking an exodus of young, educated workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/economic-survey-film-industry-decline-1.3535662\">Nova Scotia film tax credit changes damage screen industry: report<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last spring,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/b-c-lowers-tax-credit-available-to-film-industry-1.3562849\">British Columbia announced it was lowering its film industry tax credit<\/a>\u00a0from 33 per cent to 28 per cent.<br \/>\nEven Saskatchewan scrapped their credit, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/saskatchewan-film-industry-4-years-later-1.3480153\">one survey reported about 35 per cent of the people in industry left in the following four years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>10 years, $1 billion in production<\/h2>\n<p>Right now, in Manitoba, an estimated 1,600 people are employed in the industry, with a big jump in the number of people employed in the animation sector.<\/p>\n<div class=\"figure_medium\">\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.sisleridm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/meghan-duffy.jpg?w=640\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:70em) 45vw, (max-width:50em) 100vw, 33vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4053494.1491249420!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_380\/meghan-duffy.jpg 380x, https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4053494.1491249420!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_460\/meghan-duffy.jpg 460x, http:\/\/www.sisleridm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/meghan-duffy.jpg 620x, https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4053494.1491249420!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_940\/meghan-duffy.jpg 940x\" alt=\"Meghan Duffy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Meghan Duffy, the executive producer for Blackwatch Entertainment, just produced her first feature film, Mr. Snowman. (CBC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the past 10 years, there has been more than $1 billion in production, with about half of that staying in the province, according to Vivier.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s in people paying their taxes here \u2014 all the crews that are working here, this is all Manitoba. They all pay taxes here. It&#8217;s the suppliers, it&#8217;s the restaurants, it&#8217;s the car rentals, it&#8217;s legal, hotels \u2014 it all stays here,&#8221; said Vivier.<br \/>\n2017 started with filming of five features, including\u00a0<em>Nomis<\/em>, staring Stanley Tucci and Henry Cavill and the Keanu Reeves&#8217; thriller\u00a0<em>Siberia<\/em>.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, NBC&#8217;s series\u00a0<em>Channel Zero<\/em>\u00a0returned to Manitoba to film its third season.<\/p>\n<h2>Production crews are hiring<\/h2>\n<p>Last week, home-grown producer Meghan Duffy wrapped up\u00a0shooting on her first feature film,\u00a0<em>Mr. Snowman<\/em>.<br \/>\nDuffy runs Blackwatch Entertainment, a Winnipeg-based production company. She said it&#8217;s not only the tax credit that&#8217;s helping bring in business but also the low Canadian dollar.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve lived in a lot of other bigger cities, and I wouldn&#8217;t say I&#8217;m surprised that we have this here in Manitoba because we have a very supportive government and a very supportive community that has allowed us to do this here. (CBC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Police were on hand, traffic was re-directed and a line of trailers stretched down two city blocks.<br \/>\nIn one\u00a0was a full kitchen with caterer Corby Pearce.\u00a0Pearce has been catering movies for 13 years, and said the past few years he&#8217;s seen higher quality shows, big names and bigger budgets.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s been pretty steady, good work for a good four years now. It&#8217;s picked up quite a bit,&#8221; said Pearce. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just me, but a couple hundred people that now have actual, steady work that can do what they do for a living without having to look for outside work.&#8221;<br \/>\nPearce started Evolve Specialty Catering nine years ago, after spending years getting to know the business.<br \/>\nHe said in the past, there were times where the company was waiting for business, trying to decide if they should take on other events and risk not being ready for a production when one showed up.<br \/>\nBut now, he said, they&#8217;re &#8220;able to thrive,&#8221; and &#8220;reinvest ourselves into this business so we can do these jobs better, take on bigger productions, more productions.&#8221;<br \/>\nExpansion isn&#8217;t just on Pearce&#8217;s mind. Duffy said her production company is actively looking for more crew members, and Vivier said more big names are on their way to the province.<\/p>\n<h2>Could credit be cut?<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s going to continue.
