WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PROBLEM FACED BY YOUR SCHOOL’S COMMUNITY?
One of the most difficult problems faced by our community is the insufficient access to mental health support, resources and solutions in our buildings/classrooms. In the past we have created resources using Augmented Reality applications to access mental health resources with tablets. By implementing technology we created a direct-line to meaningful mental health support, and encouraged students to take the first step toward seeking help. Unfortunately we currently lack devices to access these resources.
HOW CAN STEM BE APPLIED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?
STEM would allow us to establish a Mental Health Media Lab to create meaningful APPS and resources. This lab will provide a safe and welcoming environment for those who need help. In this lab individuals will be able to create and access meaningful resources and public service announcements. These resources will be provided by national not-for-proft organizations and student-made resources. The lab will be set up to foster creation, research and education. STEM resources, such as Smart TVs, cameras and tablets would be used to create Mental Health projects or research resources, apps and videos in a safe welcoming environment.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST HURDLE YOUR STUDENTS FACE IN THE CLASSROOM THAT HINDERS THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT?
Mental Illness indirectly affects us all at some time, and this is ever-present in our schools. When a student or staff member is affected by mental illness they disconnect from others, the school and the community.  By providing a safe environment, individuals suffering from mental illness may be more likely to feel enabled to connect to the community and school. As a result, more students may stay in school and succeed in their education.
